Measuring Grant Impact: A Practical Guide for Foundations

Many grant-making foundations face the question: are our grants actually achieving what we hope for? Impact measurement is a central topic in the foundation world – and simultaneously one of the most challenging. Social change can rarely be attributed to a single grant. Nevertheless, there are practical approaches that help foundations better assess the success of their philanthropic work.

Define Clear Goals

Impact can only be measured when it's clear what should be achieved. Every grant program should have concrete, measurable objectives – such as the number of supported projects, the reach of an initiative, or changes in specific metrics. These goals form the foundation for any subsequent evaluation and should be considered during the application review process for maximum effectiveness.

From Output to Outcome

It's important to distinguish between output (what was delivered?) and outcome (what was achieved?). A workshop with 50 participants is an output. If 30 of them subsequently introduce a new procedure in their organization, that's an outcome. Foundations that consistently make this distinction gain significantly more valuable insights into the effectiveness of their grant-making activities and overall mission fulfillment.

Systematically Capture Impact Reports

For impact to become visible, grantees must report their results in a structured way. Stiftungsapp makes it possible to request standardized impact reports digitally and evaluate them centrally. Over time, this creates a data foundation that supports strategic decisions, annual reports, and communication with supervisory authorities on a solid basis – continuously improving the foundation's grant strategy.
